Weekend Getaway with Kids to Sheridan, Wyoming
Alright, folks, I was all set to create the perfect, detailed 3-day itinerary for your family weekend in Sheridan, Wyoming. But then I got carried away (surprise, surprise) and decided to just give you ALL the options! That way, you can pick and choose what sounds most fun and tailor the experience to your crew. And don’t worry, I still threw in a condensed 3-day itinerary at the end for those who want something a little more curated. But really, the world’s your oyster (or your Wyoming getaway, in this case), and you’ll have no shortage of things to do with the kids!
1. YMCA Playland, Pool, and Rock Wall
This isn’t your average YMCA. Not even close. We’ve got a playland that’s air-conditioned, so it's perfect for a summer escape when you don’t want to deal with the heat or the sunscreen meltdowns. Plus, there’s a pool with hot tubs, whirlpool, and water slides. They also have a rock wall, and an indoor basketball court (hello, pickleball). You’ll leave sweaty and happy but without sunburns.
2. Fulmer Public Library
Story hour? Check. Lego build day? Check. Play kitchen and coloring station? Oh yeah. The library is a weekly pit stop for so many families. You’ll want to check their schedule or call them to confirm days and times.
3. Bowling Alley & Arcade
Who doesn’t love a classic bowling alley with a twist? Recently Cloud Peak Lanes upgraded with an arcade that’ll keep your little ones entertained for hours. There is a bar and a kitchen for snacks/food and drinks.
Pro-tip: There is a taco bus in their parking lot and their food is well-loved in our town. (cash only)
4. Sheridan Pathways
Whether you’re walking or biking, Sheridan’s pathways are everywhere. Seriously. You can start at any end and enjoy miles of scenic trails. And for those kiddos who are ready to tackle mountain biking, check out the trails at North Park Paths for an off-road trail that’s beginner-friendly. The Sheridan Community Land Trust is a huge asset in our town and an organization we stand behind. They help create these pathways and bring great trails and paths to town.
5. Black Tooth Park
Black Tooth Park recently added an all-inclusive playground that’s not only massive (18,600 square feet!), but also gorgeous with mountain views – You’ll be able to have a great view of Black Tooth Mountain Peak. It’s a great place to let the kids run free, and it’s on the edge of town but a super quick drive.
6. Free Ice Skating at Mars Ice Rink
You’ve gotta check out the Mars Ice Rink, where you can skate for free (unless you want to take lessons). They even have little ice skating buckets for kids to push around while they get their balance.
Bonus Fact: It’s not a secret M&M factory, though it’s connected to the Mars family. The connection primarily comes from the Whitney Benefits Foundation, a local charitable organization with strong ties to the family. John Mars, one of the family members, owns property near Sheridan and has been a longtime supporter of community projects. The Mars Ice Arena was built as a gift to the community to promote recreational activities, and foster youth engagement.
7. Scoops Kendrick Park Ice Cream Stand
This beloved spot at Kendrick Park is the place for affordable, delicious ice cream with endless options. Load the kids up on sugar and let them burn it off at the nearby playground.
Fun Fact(ish): Rumor has it (based off a number of my friends who used to work there), “Scoops” wasn’t its original name—someone slapped a sign on it, and the name stuck. True or not, it’s an endearing local legend.
8. Kendrick Park Pool
Hot day? Kendrick Park Pool to the rescue! They’ve got (or they did!) a sweet deal with $1 Sundays, so you can let the kids splash around without worrying about breaking the bank. Bonus: Scoops Ice Cream Stand is right there, waiting for you to grab a cone after the swim which is also where the large Kendrick Park Playground is.
History Lesson: The Kendrick family has deep roots in Sheridan, Wyoming, beginning with John B. Kendrick, a successful cattleman who became the state's governor and a U.S. senator. The family’s ranching legacy greatly influenced the region's development, and their impact is still felt today. In honor of their contributions, Kendrick Park in Sheridan was named after the family, offering a beautiful space for the community to enjoy. The park serves as a lasting tribute to their legacy, blending history with the natural beauty of the area.
Note: they have been doing some improvements on this pool so if it’s not open, you might want to play to hop over to the Whitney Commons water fountains or indoor YMCA pool.
9. Java Moon Coffee and Bakery
Looking for a casual spot to grab a bite and coffee? Java Moon is what I like to call “Sheridan’s Watering Hole.”. It’s got a laid-back vibe, and you’re guaranteed to run into someone you know. It’s family-friendly with a full menu, so feel free to settle in for lunch and enjoy the great outdoors on one of their patios. You order yourself at the counter which is nice because when you have kiddos you have a bit more control. Also, you can move tables around as you might need.
10. Sam Mavrakis Pond
Located just off 8th Street, this pond is perfect for an afternoon of fishing or a relaxing walk. The pond is stocked with fish, and there’s easy access to the Sheridan Pathways for a nice stroll.
History Lesson: Sam Mavrakis was a WWII veteran, conservationist, and a cornerstone of Sheridan’s outdoor community. He spent over 50 years mentoring hunters and anglers while advocating for Wyoming’s lands and wildlife. Known for his generosity, Sam’s legacy lives on through his impact on the community and the Sam Mavrakis Pond, a local tribute to his lifelong passion for the outdoors.
11. Whitney Commons Fountains and Playground
If your kiddos love water, you’ve gotta hit up Whitney Commons. The “sprayground” fountain runs all day in the summer (from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm), and there’s plenty of space to run around, picnic, or just take in the beauty of the Dorothy King reflective flower garden. You can also take a quick walk down the path and across the bridge to get to Kendrick Park. This is where the ice cream stand is and another playground to explore.
History Lesson: Edward A. Whitney, a successful businessman, left a significant endowment to benefit Sheridan, leading to the creation of the Whitney Benefits Foundation. This foundation funded various community projects, including the beloved Whitney Commons park and pathways.
12. Farmer’s Market
Saturday morning Landon’s Greenhouse Farmer’s Market is a must. Delicious baked goods, fresh produce, and coffee from Landon’s own truck will have you fueled up for the rest of your day’s adventures.
13. Movie Theater
Sometimes, you just need a break from running around. Head to The Centennial Theater for a family movie experience. It’s been a local favorite for as long as I can remember, and the theater is conveniently located near Main Street so you can grab lunch before or after.
14. 307 Discovery Center
This hands-on children’s museum is perfect for kids who love to create, build, and discover new things. It’s open on Thursdays, but they also do events and can accommodate appointments, so be sure to check the schedule!
15. Fish Hatchery in Story
If you want a short little road trip, the Fish Hatchery in Story is worth the visit. It’s located in the stunning Bighorn Mountains and offers a chance to learn about fish, wildlife, and the environment—while getting some fresh air and exercise. The Tunnel Inn up there has some hit-or-miss hours but if it’s open, you could snag some food in Story or if you just need some snacks an drinks, the Story Store is darling.
16. Soldier Ridge and Hidden Hoot Trail
For nature-loving families, these trails are a must. Soldier Ridge and Hidden Hoot Trails offer beautiful views, easy paths, and a chance to enjoy Sheridan’s natural beauty without going far from town.
Fun Fact: Access to trails like Soldier Ridge and Hidden Hoot became possible thanks to a local landowner in the Roberts family who, after decades of maintaining the property as a working ranch, recognized the need for Sheridan residents to enjoy the area's natural beauty. Around 15 years ago, inspired by community input, they granted the Sheridan Community Land Trust a perpetual easement for approximately 8 miles of trails. Today, these trails offer free public access to stunning views and outdoor recreation while preserving the land’s ranching heritage. This was not something that the family had to do but it was a gracious gift to our community. Have I mentioned how amazing our town is yet? Okay, great.
*WINTER ADD ON: Antelope Butte Ski Area or sledding at the Kendrick Mansion Hill or “The Bowl” up the Bighorn Mountains.
*SEASONAL EVENTS: Concert in the Park at Kendrick, 3rd Thursdays on Main Street, and shows/plays at the WYO Theater.
